There are worries that common ownership of multiple companies in the same industry by big institutional investors will lessen competition among those companies

Mutual funds / etfs don’t make decisions for companies that their clients own through their funds.

US equity market cap is about 52 trillion USD. Total equity in funds managed by black rock is about 4,4 trillion usd — and that includes all countries, no only the US. Plus, their largest funds are (passive) index funds.

If they were actively directing the activities of all those companies, there’s no way their expense ratio could be that low. Money don’t lie
